Beta Invite Statistics

April 29th, 2007

Since posting the invite page for our upcoming beta, we’ve had a lot of people sign up. Today, we ran some of the numbers to find out which method of notification is preferred, and came up with the following results:

Subscriber Chart 04/29/07

As expected, email is the most popular method of notification for the invites, but interestingly enough a lot of people opted to be invited via instant messenger. We suspect that is mostly because of the lack of good, reliable instant messenger notification across the different providers, and people just want to see if it works. It’ll be interesting to watch as this develops.

Yeah I was going to opt in for the IM notification, but I tend to close IM windows without thinking and so am more likely to miss/ignore the message than an email.

I’m proud to be a part of the 23% minority. =)

I figured I would see it sooner via IM. I was quite pleased to see Jabber on the list.

I’m surprised by the 2% for mobile. I don’t buy it. My (web-proficient) wife and I currently manage ~7 notification networks, currently all of them in Yahoo! The largest is a Parent’s association for a 6th-12th grade school; ~200 people. The smaller ones are our kids’ soccer & baseball teams.
For the sports teams, 50% of needs for sending notification happen when we’re all wandering around Gates Sports Complex, trying to figure out what field we’re on (“where is our team?”). Parents are dialing up other parents, phones are tied up, the coach is the only one who knows what is going on, but he doesn’t have a way to get word out.
Yes, we’re all used to our email alerts.
But, when custom, subscribed, mobile alerts are available… i guess i’m saying i have 5 groups i will probably want to move over to that platform.
Heck, the entire local kids’ Soccer Association could probably use something like that for the “field closure/weather alert.” 5,000 parents signing up right there, not to mention their 5,000 kids (who text more than their parents).
    Hmmm… a long post i guess.

    I’ll second what Andy said.
I for one would have opted for the mobile option if it was available outside the us&canada.
I’m asuming there are probably a bunch of others so the percentages might be skewed.

I would agree with Jo. I’m in the UK and was glad to get an invite from a friend in the US. However, the mobile alerts are only available via US carriers. However, as my iPhone gets unlimited data connection through O2, the email option is adequate for now – but please get UK carriers involved like Twitter and FaceBook =D
