Help Us Test the Native Brightkite iPhone App!

September 1st, 2008

We know that everybody (well, at least everybody with an iPhone) has been waiting anxiously for our native app. We are getting closer to a public release, but we didn’t want to keep those of you who just can’t live without it waiting any longer: we are actively looking for Brightkite users who would like to test and give feedback on our native iPhone application via a limited beta test.

Some caveats:

  • We can only accept a small number of beta testers, primarily because Apple doesn’t allow more than 100 ad-hoc users for an app.
  • The app is not feature-complete yet. This means that there are certain things that won’t work, but the essentials (checking in, posting, reading your stream) are in there.
  • The purpose of this beta is to iron out bugs and test usability. Things might change in the app we ultimately release. Keep that in mind.

*Update: We have reached the application limit. Please stay tuned for more information on future opportunities to participate in the iPhone beta.

To apply for the beta, please fill out this form.

If you don’t get in, but want to learn more about the app, we will be hosting a chat session in which you’ll be able to answer questions later this week. Keep an eye on our blog for details.

Also, to keep up on the iPhone app and other Brightkite developments friend us on Brightkite and/or follow us on Twitter.

At first I was really not that interested in the iPhone, until I started seeing some of the apps that were available. A lot of them seem pretty cool and useful. I want to see what the blackberry app store is going to have in it.

When you develop an app for the Android G1 phone, I would be happy to beta test it.

Why can't you do what Podcaster did, recompile the app with a slightly different name, so that you can beta more users? I'd love to test. I'm not a huge user of BKite now on my Touch, because I have to type in my location. If it auto-detected, I'd use it sooooo much!!
Anyway, I can't wait to see it on the store! Any ideas on when it'll be submitted?

    Thanks!

I've have stopped using BrightKite because of the lack of iPhone app… It's the best service I've seen that involves friend tracking and the GPS on the iPhone will only make its better. I guess you guys are lucky that Loopt sucks but I hope you release it soon because someone will come out with something better.

Thank all for you patience, the iPhone app will be in the app store soon… and when we say "soon", we really do mean it! :)

74 days after the release of the iPhone 3G, 2 and the App Store …..

I personally believe that Brightkite is lucky that facebook has not added location discovery services to its existing iPhone app. It would be much easier to "follow and track" the friends you already have, leveraging one of the most widely used and active social networks.

I also strongly believe that Brightkite is also losing out on the opportunity to capture unsatisfied Loopt users and gain significant market share and headway in the area of location based social networking.

I look forward to the release of your iPhone application. I think this could be big …..

Any updates? …. another month just about to end.

If I was investing in Brightkite I would be nervous. Almost 80 days and no results?

Loopt just came out out with a new iPhone update introducing Loopt Mix which displays a page which will show you all other users around you based on proximity. Your competition is striving and continuously improving there product and you have yet to release one.

It seems to me you should make some adjustments in your delivery team – if it's your programmers you should hire more or find some more efficient ones.

Is your leadership not agreeing on your approach? Maybe you should get a board of directors to help make decisions?

You should start pulling some all-nighters.

I would love to be a beta tester for the iphone app but the form link seems to be broken.
    ###EDIT###
This was a problem with my adblock app blocking the popup from an external website. I was able to get in despite my best efforts. Sorry if I caused a firedrill.

Will this app be iPod touch capable? Because the form seems to be for iPhone owners only :(

Anyway, this is a very good news and a good argument to make me buy an iPhone 3G ;)

goodie goodie hope one comes my way… please? please?

  23. February 1st, 2009 at 02:35 | #23

It will most likely be compatible, but we don't think that the iPod Touch makes a good platform for this because location accuracy will be bad, and coverage really, really spotty.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE open this up to others! I am so jealous!!!

  39. February 1st, 2009 at 02:35 | #39

We would love to open it up but Apple only allows a limited number of slots for ad-hoc beta testing.

  40. February 1st, 2009 at 02:35 | #40

Sweet! I missed the beta sign up which sucks but I will wait for the app to come to the App Store. Sucks that Apple only lets you have 100 testers but then I can understand why. Not to side step this thread but who's looking forward for the Apple event coming up?

Damn too slow. Shame because I am a usability specialist in my job and would sacrifice my first born to get my hands on this app :)

Are you able to buy it in the Apple Store without a contract? I don't mean unlocked, just without a contract. It is for a Christmas present for a person with an older IPhone with a contract with ATT already. How much is it?by..letting

I am planning on buying the apple iphone 8gb, the 3G, but the thing is, i don't want the plan, and just the phone. How much will this cost me, and where can i buy it for a reasonable price besides ebay? also, how much is warranty…?letting
