Introducing the Brightkite Wall

November 19th, 2008

Imagine if everyone around you, even non-Brightkite users, had a window into the live stream of notes, photos and checkins being posted at a given place. With the Brightkite Wall this is now possible. The Brightkite Wall allows you to turn any monitor, projector or TV into a live interactive placestream display. The wall is perfect for conferences, live events, bars, trade shows, retailers, or just displaying on your desktop.

The best part about the Wall is it’s free, self serve and users can participate on the fly without a preexisting Brightkite account.

Try the Brightkite Wall out for yourself:

  1. Browse to the desired place.
  2. Choose the Wall tab and click on the embedded Brightkite Wall to go full screen.
  3. If desired you can customize wall. Click on the “Customize this wall” link and follow the directions.
  4. Tip: To see more activity on a given Wall browse to city, state or country level. All Brightkite posts bubble up from street > city > state > country.

View the Wall for the entire USA.

The Brightkite Wall is still in beta so if you encounter any issues or have any suggestions, let us know.

you should allow boolean search options for the custom wall! ex. (ale||lager||wine||stout)+(dinner||party)

Moderation is something that is coming in the future.

The ability to embed the wall is something we are going to do down the road.

Wow this is a great idea to put up in public places like bars and events. I could see this also getting more users to use BrightKite. Great work and I am looking forward to seeing more.

ok, well, i guess it just doesn't work when i do it. i typed “boulder, co” just like you have there, and it replaced it with some strange code “azzzby” or something like that. try it without being logged in maybe

That's a really great feature. I think our new travel center in Umeå should display this on a big monitor. :)

  12. February 1st, 2009 at 02:35 | #13

Is it possible to grab embed code for the walls? Or is that coming as you polish the feature?

  13. February 1st, 2009 at 02:35 | #14

Glad you like it! This is really an alpha release of the Wall… much more to come down the road!

Do the business owners have the ability to remove negative comments? Obviously that would be a concern for some folks

  16. February 1st, 2009 at 02:35 | #17

Well, if the negative comment is deserved, it probably shouldn't be removed. It was probably said for a reason.

  17. February 1st, 2009 at 02:35 | #18

when i try to use "boulder, co" it replaces it with some funny "code" and still shows denver. does setting the location not really work yet?

  18. February 1st, 2009 at 02:35 | #19

Customizing the location does work. The customization needs to be specific enough for it to understand the location. Try this – http://brightkite.com/places/eeb1943ea22411dd8482...

It also picks up public placemarks:
    http://brightkite.com/places/efa6e44dfa0145249be2...

Texting in @place code will work as well. All place codes are unique a given place.

    Nice! :)

  20. February 1st, 2009 at 02:35 | #21

wow, nice idea, I think that would really work outside retail stores where they can test out monitors and people could leave a message on the screen while walking by!!!
