Brightkite Sticker Hunt

January 12th, 2009

Steven Shearer (srshearer) is asking you to join in on his fun game of “hide and seek” called Brightkite Sticker Hunt. He’s been putting up Brightkite stickers around the San Francisco area and inviting you to find them. If you find one, simply post a picture of the sticker and include the term “bkitehunt” in your caption.

By including “bkitehunt” in the caption your post will appear in the Brightkite Sticker Hunt search results.

In addition you can follow the sticker hunt action on Steven’s Tumblr blog.

This is just a glimpse terms of what’s coming for Brightkite and location-based gaming. Great idea Steven! Way to get LBS gaming off the ground. :)

NOTE: Please be sure you have the required permission before placing stickers on property. You are responsible for the stickers you place.

I like the idea… but, you sure this is legal??
Reminds me of what happened to a similar campaign in Denver a few months ago…

For stickers send a self addressed stamped envelope to this address:

    Brightkite HQ
    2911 Walnut Street
    Denver, CO 80205

I would, but I doubt they accept Australian postage stamps in Denver :-P

Kieran, I just sent you an email. :)

Just stumbled across this thread while prepping my self-addressed stamped envelope and realized I am in the same boat as Kieran. What can/should I do re:stamps since I'm in Australia :-|

          • March 30th, 2009 at 15:51 | #12

Brian, just go ahead and send us a self-addressed envelope, we can cover the stamp. :)

Is it still possible to obtain stickers?

    • July 20th, 2009 at 19:07 | #14

      Hey Lesley;

I just realized after about 3 months that I sent that SASE in (I did it while in the Bkite iPhone beta program), I never got any! lol

Should I send another SASE in, or just deal with it? lol

      • July 20th, 2009 at 19:49 | #15

Sorry about that! We had an issue with our mail carrier and they were returning all of our mail for some time. Everything's been sorted out, but I won't make you send another SASE. Go ahead and message me on Brightkite (username sprouticus) with your address and I'll send you some stickers today. :)

I will also be throwing some down in the Sacramento, CA area once I receive some more stickers. So be on the lookout for those.

  9. January 12th, 2009 at 10:40 | #17

Now that I am back down at school, there will be a lot going up in the Los Angeles area (especially Pasadena) and I have @jcarillo helping me out with Sacramento and the bay area. Definitely feel free to contribute and include #bkitehunt when you post what you find or hide so I can include it on my site.

Like @srshearer, I'll be putting some up in Los Angeles & the surrounding areas…when/wherever explorations and travels lead. :-)

  11. January 13th, 2009 at 09:38 | #19

Right on. :) Looking forward to it.

David. A few more thoughts… I've always liked the idea of the existing environment as a museum, real world exhibits such as misspelled signs, painted store windows, street art, etc… I think Brightkite can help expose the often overlooked beauty of existing places.

In addition I wonder if it can encourage people to curated places with, as you suggest, public poetry, found letters, and mabye locative art. The idea of every lamp post or street corner having the voice of Pasquin ( http://tinyurl.com/8ekppc) could get very interesting.

  13. January 13th, 2009 at 12:06 | #21

I'd love to have some to spread the virus in San Diego… whatcha think? Send 'em my way.

  14. January 13th, 2009 at 12:37 | #22

I like the idea creating community around real life 'tags' but why stickers? I'd much rather you guys encourage people creating categories/tags/groups around "public poetry" or "found letters" for example.

    • January 13th, 2009 at 09:39 | #23

We have some things like that in the works :) I really like the idea of public poetry.

Brady, have you guys ever seen http://yellowarrow.net/? They did a similar mobile art implementation with yellow stickers coincidentally starting a few years back. It's awesome you guys are thinking along the location based gaming lines with bkite. You all rock!

  15. January 14th, 2009 at 02:09 | #25

I would love to do this…except I am an east coaster. I wonder if I can start scavenging with google maps? Hah that means I really would have no life if that worked. A couple of friends and myself have been messing around with brightkite and ranting about playing hide and seek…similar thought process to the scavenger hunt. glad to see we aren't the only geeks thinking this kind of stuff up : )

  16. January 14th, 2009 at 03:01 | #26

I agreed with Brady: we should be finding unusual items, places and things in our environment…. a scavenger hunt without the defacement. Maybe rearainging something in the natural environment that only we would know?

I also think next week in DC would be a great place to kick something off. So many people, such a big event, so many opportunities to make Brightkite and Twitter Buds who might never be back in our nations capital again.

Perhaps a reverse tweet up: people who check in near you in DC… but then go home after you've befriended them. The furthest distance between new Brightkite friends? The only rule being that they have to be someone you met because of a check in.

    Just a though…. not a sermon…. ;)

  17. February 13th, 2009 at 18:13 | #27

Sure is, go ahead and send us your SASE and we'll get you some. :)

What a cool game. I think we should play it in Munich too.
