Survey Says…

October 15th, 2009

It’s been a few days; we’ve added a few more features and ironed out a lot of kinks. We asked you to take part in a survey to tell us what you thought of Brightkite 2.0 and many of you have (thank you!). We thought it was only fair to share some of the results so far. The chart shows the percentage of users who like and dislike some of the new features of Brightkite (we’ve taken out the people who were undecided).

chart1

What does this mean? Generally it looks like most of you like most of the changes. However, we clearly got some things more right than others. The ability to set privacy and sharing with each post is your favorite development, but clearly the new UI and the new Friend/Fan Model still needs work. We hear you!

Your written comments in the survey were also very telling. Here are a few examples:

What do you like?

“Overall slickness – I love the new clean look, the bar at the bottom, the filtering options and the like/dislike”

What do you hate?

“Removing option for trusted friends. I can no longer provide precise location to appropriate friends”

What do you miss?

“Map view of visited places”

What do you want us to add?

“Games! Introduce challenges. Let me compete against friends.”

“I would like to see Brightkite auto-refresh the way Friend feed does.”

“Video clips and/or audio clips”

“It would be killer if Brightkite figured out where I was, and based on my patterns in the past texted me a list of the 3 most likely places I would want to check in at.”

These are just some of thousands of comments. The survey is still open, so if you haven’t taken it, we’d love to hear what you have to tell us. We sadly can’t keep everyone happy, or build everything at once, but we do want to listen and focus on the things that are most important to you. Thanks once again for all your help.

You didn’t ask people about the uptime since the redesign!

Ditto to DrCongo. I doubt you would get such a positive response to that question, or to one regarding the functioning of previously existing features since the upgrade. It really does not appear that 2.0 was even tested before being installed on the live server.

I didn't see the survey before. Probably because I can only go back an hour or so with the goofy "show more" button. Bringing back page navigation (preferably the olde-school Brightkite page nav, with numbers, like how Flickr does it!) would clear up a lot of the left-over angst I've got. Also, placemarks aren't showing up right in search, and place search seems to have become a lot less accurate lately and I have no idea why. It can't find things it used to be able to. I can say where you're at now is a lot better than where you were at the launch of the new UI. We take notice when you fix things. And a LOT of stuff got fixed quickly. You're almost there!

I have a hard time beleiving this. "Ability to like posts (thumbs up/ thumbs down) 69%" Really there are that many dipshits/cowards out there that can't take the the 10 seconds to make the obigatory "nice" comment and instead want to be anonymouse?

I'm glad things are getting fixed but this UI still sucks.

Wow. You can tell I haven't had my coffee. Obligatory and anonymous is what I meant.

Curious, what was the number of people who took the survey and what precentage of users do they constitute.

It all comes down to one word:

    Disappointment.

Please, please, please don't start adding games. Seriously? If you want to play games, go to Facebook. Leave Brightkite to the people who are serious about meeting PEOPLE and making FRIENDS, not throwing useless virtual "crap" at them. There are plenty of gaming sites on the web, just invite your BK fans there and you'll see how many people really care about games. Guys, just focus on the location and comment posting services, please.

They mean games a long the lines of foursquare, not games you actually play like on facebook.

Damn you. I understand and expect that there are sometimes glitches with new improvements. But why do you have to break things that are working ok? Have you been purchased by Microsoft?

I'm tired of having to look up my password to log in to BK. Why does FF no longer remember my password? It was working fine before you "improved" things.
