You may not know this… Brightkite can geotag your Tweets.
To enable geotagged posts on Twitter do the following:
1) Set up Twitter sharing on Brightkite.
2) Enable geotagging in your Twitter account settings (see below).
Example of geotagged Brightkite post shown in Tweetie.
That’s it! Once you’re set up on both ends, your posts will be geotagged on Twitter. Easy peasy. :)

Doesn't this mean that the "When I check in at a place, set my Twitter location accordingly" feature can probably go away now?

This feature has a different purpose, we can set it to Starbucks for example.

You should also add the city into the Geotag

it would be very nice if you'd be able to add identi.ca (or any other status.net) installation to brightkite. it has an twitter-compatible API, so integration should be possible in a snap. an the people at status.net are really helpful, just ask if you need support from them
(this would make brightkite even better, since there are still people who are twitterless)

Thanks for the suggestion, habi! There have been a few people that have asked for identi.ca sharing in the past, so it's somewhere on our list of things to look in to. I'll bring it up at our next meeting and see if that's something we can get to anytime soon.
Cheers,
Lesley

Oops, lost a bit while logging in with OpenID.
Is there any update on the integration of identi.ca to brightkite?

So just to confirm: as long as I am sharing Brightkite posts on Twitter AND I have geotagging enabled on my Twitter account, all Brightkite posts should be geotagged by default?

Yes, that is correct.

So, this might be an amateurish question, but how exact is the tag? Is it an approximate area or does it get as descriptive as coordinates and exact whereabouts. A reply to one of the above questions gives the example of Starbucks. That seems pretty "exact"

Sorry, you can excuse my stupidity. I just reread the post and say the option for "protect my tweets". Great feature!!

I think this is an incredible application. I could see how someone might think this is borderline "stalkerish", but with the protect my tweets option, you can make yourself less visible to others. Great job.
