Fresh Squeezed New Brightkite Features!

Fresh Squeezed New Brightkite Features!

May 4th, 2010

Here I am inside fm_generate_button

We just released a new update to Brightkite.com. This update is hot off the presses & only a few days after last week’s changes to our sharing functionality to Twitter & Facebook. This week, our new features include a new way to “like” and track a post, the ability to delete comments and a brand new way to filter posts and check-ins.

——————————————————————————————

Thumbs Up

A brand new feature we’ve added is a new way to give kudos and track threads. Prior to the change, you could like a topic and it would add a nice +1 next to someone’s post. This was a great way to say thanks but we thought it could be done better.

Now, when you give a post the thumbs up, the poster gets a notification via Email, SMS or Push that you liked it. As an example, when femaleprodigy liked my post above, I get a push notification on my iPhone instantly!

The rules of “like notifications” are coupled under the same settings for mentions.

Giving a post a thumbs up also configures tracking on that topic. Currently, you can track a thread by clicking “track” right next to the comment field on any post. Now, it’s easy to track a post’s comments because all you’ll have to do is leave a thumbs up and you’re tracking! It’s easy to untrack a post you’ve tracked with a single click.

——————————————————————————————

Comment Deletion

Many have asked for the ability to delete comments that people make on your posts and to be able to delete your comments made on someone’s post. We’ve all made a comment was intended for another topic or just shouldn’t have been sent. Now you can simply delete it. The same goes for a comment on one of your posts that you simply don’t care for and would rather not see. Now you can delete it.

The first example is a comment Jen made on someone’s post. Uh-oh! She didn’t mean to post that publicly. No need to worries. She can just click “delete” below the comment.

Also, Jen can delete a comment that was made on of her own posts shown in the post below.

This is only available on the web for now but as usual, we’ll be expanding this functionality to our other platforms soon.

——————————————————————————————

Enhanced Navigation Bar

The NavBar is now super awesome! We’ve ditched the drop downs and simplified filtering – the whole idea to make Brightkite easier to use.

——————————————————————————————

Wait. There’s more.

Here are other changes & enhancements we’re releasing today:

  • Updated look for the site header, Person, Place, and Object pages
  • Simplified stream filters for the above pages
  • Single Like button; no more thumbs down button
  • Comment deletion – any of your comments on other peoples posts and any comment on one of your posts
  • Email addresses in Group Text conversations are now clickable
  • Load More should no longer disappear when searching or changing filters

Let us know what you think of the new changes.

Actually expecting a revamp of the mobile website for those doesn't use Blackberry or iPhone.

And a better database of location especially in countries outside US with way to pinpoint the location when adding new location other than just the address (which is not so reliable outside US or other countries with more updated map info).

I like the site changes but dislike that the iPhone app "people" tream has changed. It is now basically just a list of names which sucks. I'd rather it had stayed as it was - just like my own personal stream in other words where I can see any photos posted as well as comments.

@Andy

Ok, ignore that comment. "Posts" is the stream of everyone's posts, "People" is altogether something different.

How about some sort of digital geocaching? That would be pretty sweet.
