McDonald’s & Starbucks Augment Reality with Brightkite

June 1st, 2010

We mentioned a couple of weeks ago the Frappuccino badge implementation we worked on with Starbucks to drive awareness of their Happy Hour campaign. We have now rolled out a new program for the Starbucks VIA brand that includes a great implementation of Augmented Reality (AR) marketing. We figured pictures were the best way of explaining how it works…

We’ve also been working with McDonald’s recently – here is a video we made that McDonald’s showed at their internal conference to 20,000 restaurant owners and employees about how mobile advertising (including AR) can help McDonald’s. Thanks to McDonald’s for letting us share this.

We love working with the teams and agencies at Starbucks & McDonald’s to push the boundaries of marketing on a mobile phone. It’s thanks to McDonald’s, Starbucks and other brands that we can keep Brightkite free to use. If you have ideas on how we improve these brand programs we’d love to hear them.

Any brands wanting to work with Brightkite can contact us here:

Brightkite uses the Layar Browser for its Augmented Reality views. Thanks to Raimo, Claire and the team at Layar for their continued help.

Lanky - picky commenter here - suggest you change "...it's VIA range..." in the caption for the second picture to "...its VIA range..."

An apostrophe used with "it" indicates the contraction "it is" as opposed to possession. - Sean

Life is a Game: Geo-location «

[...] A competitor of FourSquare and Gowalla (which I haven’t included as it is similar to FourSquare except for mayorship and ability to upload photos), Brightkite also has 2million active users and has recently made themselves known as the first company to use augmented reality in advertising. Starbucks and McDonalds were the first brands to try out this new feature and I can predict that other big-name companies will soon jump in on this move. This concept is brilliant, you can learn more about it on BrightKite’s blog. [...]

The implementation of Augmented Reality through mobile phone is wonderful. Brightkite introduces this AR advertising and other major companies are applying this AR feature for its upcoming marketing techniques.
